Operation Linebacker II

After peace talks between the United States and North Vietnam broke down in 1972, the American military carried out Operation Linebacker II, the sequel to an aerial campaign completed earlier that year. Also known as the “Christmas Bombings” or “December Raids,” American B-52s delivered heavy infrastructural damage to North Vietnam resulting in mass power outages and destroying the rail system. Operation Linebacker II resulted in approximately 1,600 civilian casualties.
