US Army 35th Infantry Regiment soldier, Bob Maves, with his “short timer” calendar, 1969. 

Those deployed to Vietnam knew when they would be leaving and many made calendars to count down the days until they got to go home. Maves’ calendar was drawn in the shape of a Huey. You can see that he colored in the days as they passed from the white section still remaining in the first photo. Also visible is that Maves’ DEROS (Date Estimated Return From Overseas) was June 14.
